Calming Effects
Valerian
Valerian tea has a direct calming effect on the central nervous system. When nervous or with a pounding heart, Valerian (in tea or tincture form) creates a balancing effect on the entire nervous system, without any dulling of the senses. It reduces mental overactivity, and as a mild sedative, aids in falling asleep. Valerian's effect on the body's entire musculature makes it quite suitable for menstral cramps, abdominal cramps, and tension headaches.
Tea Preparation: With cold water, pour 1 C water over 2 tsp. of dried valerian root, allowing it to stand for about 12 hours. With hot water, pour 1 C water over 2 tbsp. of valerian root, allowing to steep, covered, for about 20-30 minutes. Drink 3-4 cups a day if the desired effect is to calm nervousness.
